Travel stoRy on Tuesday takes you today to Helsinki in Finland. Today, on 6th December Finland celebrates its Independence Day. The history of Finland is strongly connected to Sweden and Russia. In 1809 Sweden lost a war against Russia and Finland became part of the Russian Empire. In 1917 after years of striving for freedom Finnish Independent State was declared by the Finnish Parliament.
The photo shows the Helsinki Cathedral called until 1917 as St. Nicholas Church commemorating Tsar, Nicholas I of Russia.
A moving Finnish Independence Day Tradition is to light two candles in the window in the evening. It reminds of the times when the Finnish soldiers fighting for freedom would find a shelter from the Russians in the houses with two candles burning in the windows.
