Sweden celebrates its National Day!
The 6th of June is one special day for the Swedish society. In the begging of the summer, when the sun is more and more visible on the Swedish sky, the Swedes celebrate their National Day.
The day was celebrated starting with 1916 and the Summer Olympics hosted by Stockholm. And at that moment, it honoured the election of King Gustav Vasa 1523, who established the modern Swedish state in the 16th century. Also, on 6th of June 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution.
Even if somehow the day is representing the Swedish independence after the Kalmar Union was dissolved in 1523, 6th of June was considered the Swedish flag day until 1983, when it was renamed the National Day. And only later, in 2005, it became an official Swedish public holiday.
Get the full experience of the day by walking around the central part of town, and see the festivities in Gamla Stan. More, the Royal Palace has open doors and many activities available today for everyone between 10.00 and 17.00. The full programme here.
Another suggestion is Skokloster Castle, which has free entrance, a market and music available between 11.00 and 17.00. And of course, there is Skansen, who is hosting today part of the Royal Family and has prepared various ceremonies between 10.00 and 19.30.
Happy celebrations, everyone!
