StockholmSubwaystoRy #10 – Mariatorget
Stockholm Subway with stoRy touRs
The station we are presenting you today in our StockholmSubwaystoRy is Mariatorget. It was built in 1964 and it’s located in one of the fanciest neighborhoods of Stockholm, Södermlam.
The name of the station comes from the popular public square situated 20 meters above the tunnels. Mariatorget is quite a busy station, with more than 17.000 daily passengers using the served red line.
The art here is created by Karin Björquist and Kjell Abramsson and their work gives a feeling of warmth and coziness. Asmund Arle’s bronze sculpture – “Person and Pillar” shows a little girl with a doll at one of the entrances, being a reminder of calmness in a busy day.
Finally, Mariatorget is also know for its unique gates, called “Domino”. They were added later, after the construction of the station was over, and were designed by Britt-Louise Sundell.
