The Swedish crown (kronor or SEK), as the Swedish currency it’s know, goes through a period of transition regarding its design. The update came in order to prevent the counterfeiting, but also to freshen up the coins and banknotes which already gathered more than two decades of use.

The plans for introducing new units of Swedish crown and a different design were unveiled as early as 2012. But the Swedes had to wait until the autumn of 2015 to get their hands on the updated currency.

The new 20, 50, 200 and 1.000 crowns banknotes were introduced on the 1st of October 2015, with the 200 SEK banknote being completely new. On the other hand, the older equivalent of the others became invalid after 30th of June 2016.

Nevertheless, this autumn brought the last step in the update planned by the Swedish authorities. Starting with the 3rd of October new banknotes for 100 and 500 SEK were introduced. As well as new coins for 1 and 5 SEK. Also, the 2 SEK coin was introduced in the market.

This leaves the 10 SEK coin the only part of the Swedish currency which will not get a makeover in this project. Find out more about this subject on the official website of the Swedish Central Bank, here.
